Who are Pachamama?
Are they as good as Fleurtations say they are?
Are they really fairly traded?
Are they 100% wool?
Who knits them?
You've asked us some really good questions, thank you.
Here are the answers.
Pachamama Knitwear began in 1990 trading goods from the Andean Mountains of South America, Pachamama translates as 'Earth Mother' from the ancient language of the Incas.
Since 1996 Pachamama have been trading in handmade woollen knitted clothing from Nepal including their hugely popular bobble beanies, handwarmers, headbands and socks.
This has now expanded into household goods like Trivets, Cushions, Tea Cosies and Hot Water Bottle Covers.
At a time when the high streets are populated by the same chain stores, selling the same mass produced clothes, it is Pachamama's aim to help people express their individuality by offering them something a little different and because every piece of knitwear is handknitted, they are all slightly different, so you are always wearing something totally unique!
The simple answer is yes, they are as good as we say they are.
For the quality of the wools, the designs and the price, there is nothing better currently online.
We put our reputation, for only selling quality items at realistic prices, on Pachamama. We have been trading with them for over 20 years and can honestly say that they are a truly lovely ethical company, they actuallu give a percentage of their takings to children's charities.
Yes, all Pachamama products are fairly traded, they are members of BAFTS - Fair Trade Network UK.
They make frequent visits to Nepal to ensure their ethical policies are adhered to. Workers are paid above the national average, treated equally and with respect, regardless of gender, race or religion.
Traditional weaving and knitting techniques are adhered to and promoted and employment is freely chosen with no forced, bonded or child labour involved anywhere.
Yes, all Pachamama outers are 100% wool.
This is all sourced from New Zealand and contains lanolin, which is naturally secreted by sheep. This is what makes their coats waterproof. It means that your bobble beanies, handwarmers, socks etc. are better protected from the elements!
Pachamama products are now solely handknitted in Nepal by village based knitters, who supplement their incomes from farming with knitting Pachamama designs.
Here are a few of their designs, starting with a Pachamama Bobble Beanie.
This is Pachamama Cotopaxi Bobble Beanie Teal Hat and matching handwarmer fingerless gloves.
These Pachamama Bobble Beanies are knitted in Nepal by local villagers using local wools and natural dyes to UK designs.
